Occurs as a very abundant, year-round resident and summer breeder. Well over a 100 pairs have nested on the lab grounds. Most nests are located around the main ring moat and the dike around the oxidation pond, but other nests can be found scattered throughout the lab's wet areas. In recent years, however, the nesting success of on-site birds has been extremely poor. Numbers swell into the thousands by November and December as the geese are attracted to the area by the open water at the lab and abundant food supplies in nearby cornfields.
