At this time of year, this species is uncommon on site.

Occurs as a fairly common migrant on the lakes and ponds throughout the lab. It has also become a regular winter resident in small numbers on open bodies of water such as the Main Ring moat and Swan Lake. On May 27, 2002, a female with eight ducklings was found in marsh on the west side of the main ring. This was the first site breeding record for this species. A second site breeding of this species was confirmed on May 26, 2013, when a female and seven ducklings were found on Lake Logo. A third site breeding of this species was confirmed on the main woodland pond south of Giese Rd. Three females and five ducklings found on May 22, 2015.
