Rough-legged Hawk

(Buteo lagopus)

Status: Winter Resident. Last recorded on site in 2021

The Patuxent web-site provides more general information about this species.
At this time of year, this species is uncommon on site.

Occurs as an irregular migrant and winter resident, usually arriving in late fall. Several may remain on site until mid-March. They can at times be seen hunting over the grasslands and roadside ditches. Numbers vary greatly from year to year, though "Christmas Bird Count" data suggests a significant decline since the early 1980's. A Rough-leg was found in the Lab on May 11, 2019 to tie the latest entry, this despite the recent drop in yearly sightings.
